How does Pokémon Reborn challenge heteronormative game design of the series? And then how does the production and the development of Pokémon Reborn as well as the game design and the characterization and storyline challenge some previous research on queer modding practices. But I am looking specifically at the game in terms of how does this game Pokémon Reborn challenge heteronormative game design, right? Cause we see it very much deliberately, including queer characters. So you have this overt queerness in the game, right? With the characterization, with the storylines, with some of the choices the player can make. You also have abusive relationships, which is also unfortunately common for queer relationships as well. We also have, you know, disagreements with family members getting kicked out of the home. One of the characters who comes out as pansexual, that’s kind of one of their stories. And then finally there’s, there’s queer storylines, right? Coming out. The player can also choose their gender and their pronouns. You have a non-binary gym leader as well. You have the strongest person in the game, which is the Pokémon champion is a trans woman. Something about Pokémon Reborn, this game is very different. The game has also introduced some new gameplay mechanics, some new stories, some new characters. And so Pokémon Reborn uses this crowdsourced code basically that has recreated the Pokémon battling system.

So there’s a suite of programming software called Pokémon essentials that has been crowdsourced online for a number of years. Here’s hoping!Īnd Pokémon to Reborn uses original game play mechanics and assets. That’s come out in episodes since 2012 and the final episode is supposed to come out sometime in 2021.

Amethyst who identifies as trans on her online platforms, including the development blog for Pokémon Reborn, developed the game starting in 2012 and slowly a development team full of all queer people have come together to create this game. So Pokémon Reborn is a Pokémon fan game that was created by a trans woman named Amethyst, and it’s helmed by a queer development team. And I’ll talk about it in the context of queer modding. So it’s not a mainline Pokémon title, but a fan title. So today I’m going to be talking about a game called Pokémon Reborn, which is a Pokémon fan game. Thanks for listening to my presentation and thank you to everyone at QGCON for giving me the chance to share my work.
